So, I got a one year old Border Collie from my local Animal Control Center. She did spend a few days in the kennel there. I visited her everyday and although she seemed stressed, she was happy to see me and showed lots of energy. She got home on Monday night and has basically been sleeping since. A one year old Border Collie! Sleeping!
I got a free vet appointment out of the adoption and they checked her temp which was fine and they said she seemed like a healthy dog but wouldn't really know unless I spent 200 bucks checking for heartworm and a bunch of other stuff. I think it was their regular new patient schpeil.
She did have a few ticks that I didn't notice but the vet did. Her coat is good looking, she eats okay but I think she hates the food I got her. She is great on walks and on the leash in general. She is an awesome dog and I just want to make sure she is going to be okay. She even layed down and napped while the vet and I chatted.
I am going to get her some more shots tomorrow at our local ABC shot clinic. Is it okay to get a dog shots if she's sick? She does have a slight cough and the vet said to just watch it for a week to 10 days. Does this sound right? Could she just be adjusting?
Her poop is fine, and there's plenty of it. And even though she doesn't like her dog food, she sure likes the cat food and the tuna I gave her!
It just seems strange to have a one year old Border Collie that would prefer to sleep all day. Could she be depressed?
Thanks for letting me vent! Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Sun, October 19, 2008 - 10:03 AMStop feeding her cat food. Too much protein for a dog. I make our dogs breakfast which includes spinach, carrot and oat/barley meal. To that I add different flavors just to vary it a bit. Sometimes they get sweet potatoes.
My boder collie sleeps a lot during the day, though when I let the pack out he out runs most of them. You might want to go back to the shelter and ask the attendants if they noticed anything unusual about your new friend. Also see if they did a basic checkup on her when she arrived. -

Sun, October 19, 2008 - 1:22 PMWell the cat food was just the one time. I think I caught her on the first time, at least.
I believe she just has kennel cough. Her energy level is much better, her appetite is much better, and her poops are normal.
I think she's gonna make it! But, wow, what a panic when she was sleeping 24/7! -

Thu, October 23, 2008 - 10:56 AMI would believe she has kennel cough as well as this runs ramped in shelters. However, some other things to be aware of is distemper has many symptoms and not all show up in all dogs.... as an adult dog at the shelter we can not assume her previous owners kept her up on these shots... some times it shows up as a cough at first with some low energy.
Dogs also do have adjustment time in their new home that can be from 1 week to 3 months! Border collies are very sensitive dogs and do need training to help them bond with their new owner and new life.
Thank you for adopting! Border collies are one of the highest risk for being euthanized because they are so sensitive and do not do well in shelters... they get very depressed!
You should get settled with a vet you trust as they will advise you with lab work and money should not be a question in your mind, why you trust your vet "is it really necessary" should not be in the back of your head.
Hope this helps you! and thanks again for adopting her!!! -

Thu, October 23, 2008 - 7:19 PMOkay I took her to a vet. She just had kennel cough! I say, "just" cuz it could have ended up to be other things, as Cayce mentioned. But, I did get her some antibiotics and she has been on them for 3 days and WOW is she doing SO SO SO SO much better! I am so happy to report this. She is a fantastic dog and I am so happy we have her. I am happy I didn't wait any longer for her to get better on her own.
Her name is Hannah and she ROCKS! :) -

Thu, October 23, 2008 - 9:18 PMI found a year old terrier mix on the street a couple of months ago. He slept A LOT. That was then. Got some good food into him, treated him with advantix and he's a true terrierist now. Completely bananas.
Glad she's better, but dogs that come out of shelters have gone from a high stress place to live to a real home and they are very often taking advantage of the fact that they are safe. -

Thu, November 20, 2008 - 5:40 PMHannah is a FANTASTIC doggie! We love her so much and I am positive she feels the same love for us. Sure, she's chewed a few things I'd rather she didn't, but she is a true gem. Perfect on the leash, fantastic at the dog park, wary of people walking up the drive, and a great sleeper. I was worried she would be nipping at my heels around the kitchen, but no, she just lays on the kitchen rug by the sink!
Thanks for all your advice. I was really freaking out for a while there. But she has settled in nicely and is really healthy. Her coat is gleaming! -

Wed, January 21, 2009 - 9:30 PMthat's great news! With any animal, there is always a time for adjustment. She must have been exhausted from all the stress before and had a nice long over due "nap". Glad you took her in and got rid of the kennel cough.
Give her smoochies!! Love that breed
