Chi Chi needs a home, has been in the kennel for a LONG TIME!

Hey, I am new to this tribe and I am looking for a home for Chi Chi. 3-5 years old, male, neutered ,105# golden retriever/labrador mix

His Story:
Chi Chi was raised with another dog, named Cecil. This is the only other dog Chi Chi was every exposed to for a long time, and therefore was not socialized properly. His owner died, and Cecil found a home, leaving Chi Chi alone. The veterinarian I work for knew the owner and brought Chi Chi to the clinic, where he has stayed for a couple of months now.

The Condition:
He needs LOTS of exercise or room to run. He does have special needs, he is DOG AGRESSIVE. This must be taken seriously. He is fine with cats, but his new home must have no other dogs (I assume most people on here have dogs or are looking, so please pass the word on to people looking for a dog who don't already have one). His new home needs to have a large fenced area, prefferably a tall, solid fence (not transparent as he tends to bark a lot). We are unsure how he does with children.

The Benefits:
Besides getting a loving companion, Chi Chi is entitled to FREE VETERINARY CARE at Ashland Veterinary Hospital ONLY.

With any inquiries, please call me.

Dear Shannon, PRSD ( pitbull rescue san diego )

Re:

OCTAVIA: BEYOND URGENT, HAS UNTIL 5PM TODAY AT THE SHELTER - This big, beautiful girl has until the end of the day today at the shelter. So far we have had no responses to foster her and time is pretty much up unless we can come up with placement for her by 5pm today. The shelters are overflowing with dogs right now and Octavia is one of them. Please help if you can by contacting Shannon ASAP

I am frustrated with the way that Octavia was portrayed on the PRSD website as her last day being today at 5PM.
I was in work meetings all day today, but was texting Shannon, emailing her and called and left a message and my boyfriend Pete did… He did not hear back from anyone.
He eventually did some searching on the web and found Octavia at the Carlsbad shelter. Not working right now, money very tight, he scurried up there to ‘’save her’’
…a long way to go at $4.50 a gallon for gas, from Normal Heights. When he got there, she was not there and was out in medical, being spayed.
They told him she was NOT at risk of being euthanized, nor was she ever at risk.

So whilst I certainly appreciate and respect what you guys do – I think the line of communication should be clearer. Octavia never “had until 5PM today” nor was
“ her time up” at the shelter … according to the people that worked there… She had no risk of it being her final hour.

So despite that it was our choice to rush up there – I’m not sure that the information that you posted was correct and hence a little frustrating at best.

The good news, is that she is getting spayed and up for a possible adoption.

Regards,

Jennifer

Wanna help animals with special medical needs?

The North Shore Animal League on Long Island is one of the world's largest no kill shelters. They specialize in the treatment and care of some of the trickiest animal medical conditions, relying heavily on donations to fund the operations, medications and rehabilitation of these animals.

I got my first dog (well, my parents did a year before I was born) at the North Shore Animal League, and I've been a lifelong supporter of their animal advocacy programs ever since I was old enough to lick an envelope.

If you can't adopt a shelter animal but have a few dollars to spare, you can contribute to keeping these animals healthy, happy and in tip top shape for finding their forever homes.

And even if you can't afford to donate, I encourage you to read the story below. It will make you feel good. :)

I'm going all out here... praying for a miracle...

Hello Doggie Rescuers!

Nice to "meet" you :)

So here's the skinny...

I rescued a pup who was dying in the arms of a street kid while traveling through Memphis Tennessee... rising in love with this 4 legged dream I gave up an entire year of my life to raise and train what I thought was going to be my lifelong companion.

Now that my boy is practically outweighing me (I weigh a mere 106 lbs) and does so already in strength, my rescuing him is beginning to cripple us both.

I'm typically super positive, ridiculously blissfull, and amazingly loving and kind but little by little I'm becoming more and more of a stress case because I've got way too much dog to handle.

It's affecting my livelihood, my emotional stability, my health and even my ability to continue living where I currently live. Not to mention that I feel my continued stress could very easily create stress/anxiety in my pooch which he certainly doesn't deserve or need. :(

In truth... I'm loosing it. Can ya help... please? o:)

I'm looking for a foster home until I can find permanent housing for, who I truly believe to be the most amazing pooch that has ever entered my life.

Again, he's SUPER trained already, completely socialized (even has the tongue hanging to the side dealio - which I'm told from badrap.org is a sign of super social skills and kind personality), is good off leash and on, can play or be mellow, is a great snuggler... to name a few...

If not you, do you know of another who could help?

Let me know your thoughts,

Cassidy is gone. (Sad story and a caution about demodex treatment.)

Cassidy came to us with a terrible case of demodectic mange. It is a mite infection. Well, actually... it is an immune deficiancy, because all dogs carry these mites. But, in the ones that develop demodex there is a full blown infection. Hair loss. Itching. Skin lesions.

Once when I was a little girl I had a dog named Angie. She developed demodex and, though we treated her with mitaban baths... she never got well. After a year, she developed a sore that would not heal and was euthanized. It tore me up. I loved that girl!

Maybe it is because of Angie that I actually accept mange dogs into rescue. Many rescuers won't take them at all. They are hard to place, and very expensive to heal. Their treatment is long term. Over the course of five years rescuing... I have taken in about a dozen of them. Cassidy is the second one to not make it. Heemie was the first. He, as some of you may recall, also tore me up. That was two years ago. Here he is:
http://people.tribe.net/ammanaga/blog/fcbd57b9-09fa-474b-82ba-2ab0a0442c1a

I wasn't sure about this with Heemie. Now I am all but certain that drug toxicity is the culprit. You see, the medications we now use to treat demodectic mange are known to be neurotoxins. Even in controlled doses. And especially, apparently, to collies. Heemie and Cassie both appeared, to me, to be part collie. Not enough to be labelled "collie" but enough to share some genetic markers.

Ivermectin is a pesticide that has been invaluable to veterinarians... in the prevention and treatment of heartworm. It is pretty "safe" when given once a month in low doses, as it is in heartworm prevention. Even when given every day for two weeks to treat sarcoptic mange.... it seems to have no adverse effects that I have seen. But..... over the course of months of treatment for persistant demodex.... it seems, to me, to invoke violent outbursts. This is the second time I've seen the pattern. Cassidy's episodes had been getting worse and more frequent. (Just as Heemie's did, now that I think back on it.) Last evening she all out attacked the beagle,Celine, with intent to kill. After I broke it up I knew her time was up.

And I also know it will be a long time before I take in another demodex case. Especially if the dog appears to be even a little bit collie.

Amma

Happy Doggy Story :)

Yesterday I was driving home from work and watched as a smallish black lab mix darted across 7 lanes of traffic and in front of an oncoming truck. My heart stopped for a moment, but fortunately, he was really fast and made it safely across.

I changed course and caught up with him near the local Denny's where he'd stopped to relieve himself. He then proceeded to prance happily around the parking lot. I followed him for a bit with my car, calling out to him, but realized my best bet was to get out and see if he would come to me while I was on foot.

I walked a bit closer and called out to him in a sweet voice. His ears perked up and he looked over in interest. He then decided that, "Yes," I was worth coming over to check out. Fortunately he was wearing a harness which provided me with a pretty good handle to hold on without putting any strain on him. I started petting him, and he was very receptive to me.

I got him to jump into my car and off we went to the local animal shelter. They registered him and gave him a place to sleep, food etc and told me that they would keep him in the "found" department for 1 week and then evaluate him for adoption.

I was going to put up posters today and decided to call the shelter to see if he'd been reunited with his people before I put the posters out. I spoke to a woman who remembered my coming in with the small black lab in the harness, and she told me, "Yes! He was redeemed today!" I was so happy that the moment I got off the phone I broke down in tears! He is such a sweet little dog, and I'm so happy that he belongs to a good family that was actively searching for him and found him at the shelter the very next day! Also, this shelter requires that people pay a redemption fee of nearly $100 to pick up their found animals, so people have to really be committed to their pets to bring 'em home! So, yep! This is one lucky little guy who was rescued from traffic and reunited with a caring family!

Hooray!

:) :) :)

I just found an American coon hound in front of my house! A sweetie who is trained to sit and lie down, full of energy and style, loves playing and running - but he also loves to chase cats....and since I have rescued about 15 of those little monsters, he can't stay here. We also have three dogs, and except for feeding time, everyone's playing like crazy. Is there a home out there for these big, beautiful brown eyes? I love him so, but this is not the place for him. I'm hoping to find him a home soon; he seems to be a great working dog...and he's so very affectionate ; he'll be a great buddy to someone. Can you take him home? He'll kiss you forever!!

Thank you ahead of time for reading this.

JSun and Rogan

This is going out to all my friends and family on my address book, tribe.net and myspace.com.

This year has been a great one for my dog Rogan and I, living in Portland, OR. Unfortunately earlier in the year, Rogan suffered a torn ACL to his right hind knee. Not having the money to get the expensive surgery on his knee right away, I made the hard choice of waiting and seeing how he would recover from it. He was doing really wonderfully until Thanksgiving of last year. While up at a friend’s house in Welches, OR he was outside while we were eating dinner and tore the ACL in the opposite leg. He now has bi-lateral ACL tears in his knees.

Rogan is a very healthy, energetic and strong 9-year old dog. We are having a very hard time with him not being able to live the active and adventurous lifestyle he and I are accustomed to. As is dad, I am suffering from watching him in pain, when I am unable to provide him with the surgery he needs. He is getting around on his two bad knees pretty well and is showing how strong willed and physically able he is. He will be able to live a very happy and active life with the surgery. His knees will work better than when he had no injury.

I am writing this letter to everyone I know and the surrounding community for help in this dire time for him. I am unable to cover the large cost of this surgery and am barely able to feed myself due to being laid off from my job back in October.

The surgery is a cost of $3500 and will cover everything that will be needed to make a full recovery in only 6 weeks. This is the best and only surgery that the doctors offer to a dog his size and it has the shortest recovery period. Once his knees are fixed, he will be better than before and able to go about his life like he wants too -- spending most of his time with me enjoying the magical outdoors Oregon has to offer, while running in the park up the road from our home in the city, with his friends.

I am asking all of my family and friends in every corner of my world for help in this time of need. If everyone I know kindly donated $20 to his cause, he would have the surgery, no problem. This is going out to well over 300 people in the Internet world, that I know. That would cover all and more. Anything over the cost of his surgery will be donated to a local animal shelter for another dog whose owner cannot afford surgery too.

We are asking from the bottom of our hearts to please help in this situation. This would allow him to live the rest of his years with out pain and loving the active life that he is so used to having.

Please! Look into your hearts and find the time to read this email and post.
My email for any questions or comments is:

Two SWEET DOGS NEED HOME TODAY!!!!

This was sent to me by friend Playagirl, and so I thought I'd help to spread the word. If anyone can help, please do!

Hi Everyone,
I'm pleading with the Universe to please find two sweet, adorable dogs homes. They had to be put into a city shelter because the people who found them couldn't keep them. They were found on the side of the highway in Northern Cali. They had been wandering around for days, eating nothing but grass. When the people stopped to see if they could help, the dogs, a mama and a baby pit bull, ran right up to them, wagging their tails and licking them and jumped in the car. They are ready to love and have a beautiful safe home.
The reason we need to get them out of the shelter is because these are the kind of dogs that get put to sleep first because they get taken away for fighting.
Please, please, please help. Please forward this to anyone you know who might be looking for a dog. Or even someone who doesn't yet know they are looking for one. These beauties need good homes. Please help if you can. Thank you! Please contact me for more photos or to help if you can.
Thank you again for anything you can do.

oscar the dog from NIMBY needs a new home

hi everybody.
this post is about oscar the dog who hangs out at nimby.
sadly sadly after nearly 8 years together, oscar and i must part. i am a single mom of a 2 year old kid and can no longer care for him. plus my kid antagonizes him daily.
oscar needs a new home.
he is the sweetest most loveable loving goofball. a gentle giant. great dane pittbull mix. almost 8 years old. good health and temper. well trained but does beg for food from being spoiled at nimby!! he loves the albany landfill and hanging out in the metalshop.
hopefully you are someone i know already, someone related to nimby, or our local art scene. looking forward to hearing back.
thx.

Rayna wants you to know: "She's my service guide girl for the last seven years. She's helped me through more than 80 surgical procedures. Berlin has developed diabetes and, ironically, is going blind herself. She needs insulin and surgery. Please provide donations to Have A Heart Foundation. Please help save a wonderful guide girl, service animal, and best friend."

Rescue Recession (are you feeling it?)

I hate to say this... but I am feeling the pinch. Going into deeper and deeper debt for vet care, and not seeing the expected surge in adoptions that cuties like my beagle litter usually bring.

Beyond that, I am receiving a call a day from folks losing homes or jobs, and needing to relinquish pets. Normally I blow such people off. My belief is that someone simply shouldn't move to a place where pets aren't allowed if it means they have to abandon a family member. But.... what if they have to move in with relatives? Relatives who are allergic? And already doing them a huge favor by putting them up? That's the sad situation I'm confronting today. I just hate it.

I think it's the economy. And people aren't the only ones suffering from it.

This just came in on my DrJon@PetPlace.com newsletter.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the 4 pups. And set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of little boy. "Mister," he said, "I want to buy one of your puppies"

"Well," said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, "These puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money." The boy dropped his head for a moment.
Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer.
"I've got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?"

"Sure," said the farmer. And with that he let out a whistle.
"Here, Dolly!" he called.

Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur.
The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight.
As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse.

Slowly another little ball appeared, this one noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward manner, the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up... "I want that one," the little boy said, pointing to the runt. The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said, "Son, you don't want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would."

With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe.
Looking back up at the farmer, he said,
"You see sir, I don't run too well myself,
and he will need someone who understands"
With tears in his eyes, the farmer reached down and picked up the little pup.

Holding it carefully he handed it to the little boy.

"How much?" asked the little boy. "No charge," answered the farmer, "There's no charge for love."

The world is full of people who need someone who understands.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway, I just thought it fit here.

should I adopt a senior dog?

I really would like to adopt a dog, but aspects of my lifestyle make it seem that an older dog would really be ideal. However, I am worried about medical expenses I won't be able to handle. For example, I know of a Bichon Frise (13? 14?) whose current owner wants to rehome her. I believe the only problem she has right now are cataracts. She is a very sweet dog, would be free, and would get much more attention from me than from her current owner.

With that said - this would be my first dog, and I have no clue as to what medical expenses could rack up to. I'm the type who will try my best to pay the vet bills, rather than wanting to put a dog to sleep. Does anyone know what future expenses could range from? I understand that it depends on the issue, but I"m wondering if it would likely be an occasional fee in the hundreds or thousands of dollars on procedures one after the other. And at what point do people have to put a dog to sleep? Would a vet tell me? Just a concrete idea of what I'd be getting into would be very helpful. Thanks:-)

Pinot Dog

Hi Folks,

I rescued Pinot 3 months ago, finally she is up to date on all of her shots and just went through her spay operation.

My land lord will not allow me to keep her here and I dont have the means to move.

Pinot would make a great companion for an adult, teenager or older child (9 years and on)

I have not had the opportunity to give her formal training class.

She is good on walks, has learned SIT and were still working on STAY and HEEL

She has learned many tricks like down, crawl, shake and is currently learning to roll.

I dont want to give her up to a shelter because of her breed.

I had one couple in NYC interested in her but they settled on a dog closer to home.

I have posted her pic, any advise or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You
Family pets need new home.. ASAP

My family is in a desparate situation right now and we have to move in 2 weeks. My roommate/exhusband is going to prison and I need to find homes for his pets. I can't keep them b/c I already have 3 cats and my boyfriend's dog.

Tucker is a sheppard lab 8 month old pup. He's about 80 pounds now, has had all of his shots and just needs to be neutered now. He's great with kids and tries his best to get the cats to play with him. Very fun loving dog. Loves to go for walks and yes, is potty trained. Who ever wants him will also get his big fluffy pillow bed, favorite toys, leash and whatever food we have.

Billy is a sweet old black cat with a white belly. I'd guess he's around 7 years old. Very loving and occasionally playful. He has also had his shots and been neutered. I think he may have a couple teeth gone bad b/c his breath is horrendous.

Haley is a cute little gray tabby. She is 2-3 years old. Also vaccinated and spayed. She unfortunately is a skittish one. Sometimes she will want to be loved but for the most part she is not a human's cat... she is a cat's cat. Billy (the cat described above) is her best friend. She gets along with the other cats as well but Billy is her man. And she HATES the dog.

Savanna is a sweatheart but has to stay outside. She's 2 years old. Otherwise she'll pee where she shouldn't in the house. She is white with gray tabby markings on her head, back and tail. She too has been vaccinated and spayed.

If you or someone you know is interested, please let me know.

Thanks,
Annie

Did you know that chickens, pigs and calves can't move on many farms?

I am collecting signatures for a very worthy grassroots cause. Californians for Humane Farms is trying to get a proposition on next year's ballot that would require farms in the state to have cages big enough for the animals to stand, sit and turn around. That is all this measure calls for. It has already passed in Arizona and Florida and is law in Oregon too. Let me know if you would like to sign my petition to give voters a chance to change this cruel farm practice. We need 650,000 signatures by Feb. 22, so please consider volunteering to gather signatures. The Web site is: humanecalifornia.org/. And if you know of events/venues that would be good for collecting signatures send them my way.
Thanks,

For anybody out there who is familiar with Poca (she's the dog that is currently posted on the front page)... I am very happy to report that Poca, after a great deal of trial and tribulation, has safely made it out of Mexico and the confines of the crappy cage she was in for over a year. She has been adopted (FINALLY!!!) and is settled in Albq, New Mexico. Thanks for keeping her pic up.. and for those who tried to help. Many thanks,
Liberty County, GA is located right outside of the gates of Fort Stewart and is approximately 45 minutes from Savannah.

Do not contact me to save this animal. I do not work for animal control and may not be able to reach them in time. I am a volunteer. Please call Animal Control IMMEDIATELY at 912-876-9191. If it is after hours, please leave a message stating which animal(s) you are calling about. They listen to messages before euthanasia. This animal could die as soon as Thursday. Please save if you can and repost if you can't!

case #805-1390

This puppy fought for life. Now he needs someone to fight for him.

An officer found this little brindle boy clawing his way out of a plastic bag. He could have suffocated and died, but he fought for his freedom, he struggled for the opportunity to live.

Yet his fight might be to no avail. He's no longer at risk of suffocation, but he is still at very high risk of death.

Now at Liberty County Animal Control, he could be euthanized as early as this coming Thursday unless someone steps in to save him.

He is 10 to 14 weeks old and was picked up at EB Cooper and Holmestown.

If you can save this animal, please contact:

Please update me if you do, so that I know that these postings are working. Thank you!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Please note:
Although they share the same address and similar names, Liberty County Animal Control and Liberty County Humane Shelter are NOT the same entity!

Animal Control is run by the county and all animals are at high risk of euthanasia (regardless of age, breed or temperament) as they are only allowed a brief period of time to be claimed.

Also, Liberty County Animal Control is not an adoption facility. They are only able to release to licensed rescues. However, no one wants to see an animal die unnecessarily, so if you would like to adopt one of their animals, they are often able to set it up with a rescue. This teamwork spares lives :)

Some breeds (such as Pit Bulls) are adopted out more cautiously, and depending on the rescue the adoption is done through, there may even be a home check to be certain the animal will not be used for the atrocities of fighting (which is a problem in this area), breeding (all animals must be spayed or neutered - no exceptions), or other unacceptable purposes.

Before you ask:
Animals that find themselves at AC do not receive veterinary check-ups or care such as vaccinations. In most cases, very little is known about their history since most of them were picked up as strays.

Even their breed is often just a guess to fill in the blanks on paperwork or postings.

In most cases, we do not know if they are housetrained, good with other species of animals, or good with children or little old ladies. If I do know, I do my best to include it in their list

Hi everyone,

As some may know we found a dog in Tahoe awhile ago. She's a beautiful
female black lab/retriever mix, we found her wondering the beach. We took
her home and had her for a month, her owner called and asked for her back.

Long story short, she is back at the shelter here in Tahoe. They called to
ask me if we wanted to adopt her, we have since adopted another dog and
cannot have two large dogs.

Is anyone interested in her? She is in great shape and very friendly.
She's great in the car and she loves to go for walks. Her picture is on the
Tahoe Vista Animal Shelter website. Click on lost and adoptable dogs, she's
listed as "Scoop".

I would be willing to bring her back with us next week when we come home.
Please let me know if you might be interested. It breaks my heart she's at
the shelter again. If you know of anyone please forward this message. I
hope you are all having a great summer.

I rescued a Pit Bull two months ago. This guy was selling her at my corner store asking anyone for $25 for the dog.
I stopped to talk with him and he told me his sister had gotten the Pup, was shipped to Iraq and left the dog with her elderly Mother. Section 8 threatened to evict them once they found out about the dog. My heart melted and I gave him the cash and came home with the dog.
I live in a large house with a big yard. My roomates were not happy about the new addition to the house, but they have been tolerant.

She was not walked or socalized too well, and she was trained to go in the kitchen.

Ive been training her every day, teaching her to walk, fetch. She is crate trained and after a few weeks of work, she is potty trained.

Our land lord came for a visit and flipped out and said I have to get rid of the dog.

Her name is Pinot, she is black and white spotted, small female about 11 months old. Completely loving and responsive training.

Once I have her fixed I can list her with rescue sites.

I really want her to go to a good home, she is great with older children and full of love. I want with all of my heart to keep her here with me, but I cant afford to loose my home.

Any advise or information would be accepted with gratitude.

Thanks you,
Petition the Atlanta Falcons to use Michael Vick's contract to support animal rights education

Hey fellow dog lovers. As you may know, Michael Vick will enter a guilty
plea for his role in running dog fighting enterprises. In all likelihood, he
will lose all of his remaining salary for this year and the balance of his
contract. Please join me in urging the Atlanta Falcons to use those funds to
promote awareness for the humane treatment of dogs and other animals. A
sample letter is below. Here are the links on how to contact them:

THANK YOU!!

http://www.atlantafalcons.com/About/Contact_Us.aspx

or

fans@falcons.nfl.com

Arthur Blank
Owner and CEO
Atlanta Falcons
4400 Falcon Parkway
Flowery Branch, GA 30542

Dr. Mr. Blank:

I can only imagine that shock and profound disappointment that the Atlanta
Falcons organization must be experiencing in light of the Michael Vick
scandal. Never before has there been such a horrifying display of cruelty to
animals committed by a professional athlete. And, needless to say, it is
inevitable that this debacle will reflect negatively on the Falcons for some
time to come.

Yet your organization can begin winning back fans across the country
immediately. Since it has been reported that Vick will plead guilty, one can
assume that you will be able to abnegate the remainder of his contract. In
addition, you might be able to recover a portion of the sizeable bonus
already paid out to him.

You have the opportunity transform an abhorrent situation into one that over
the long run could save hundreds of thousands of dogs. I strongly encourage
you to take the money you would have paid Vick this season and distribute it
to the American Society for the Prevention of Animals, the National Humane
Society Education Society, as well as to neuter/spay clinics and animal
adoption centers throughout Georgia.

In addition, I encourage you to take a portion of future funds committed to
the Vick contract and enter into a partnership with the NFL to run an
aggressive public service announcement campaign on behalf of the humane care
and treatment of dogs and other animals.

Mr. Blank, you are in the unique position to turn a calamity into a very
powerful campaign to protect and care for dogs and other animals. Please do
the right thing.

Sincerely,

Eric A. Politzer

Fostering questions can anyone help?

I live within the city limits. I have 2 of my own mastiffs that I rescued and adopted. I am currently fostering 2 more....older dogs who have lived together their whole lives.....only the perfect home will do for them. :) I am getting a puppy this fall. Anyway, the city says you can have 4 animals per household. ( I have 2 indoor cats that I don't count) Does anyone know if foster animals count toward the 4?

They are offical mastiff rescue dogs and they are listed on petfinder. The original plan was when my puppy gets here that if the 2 fosters hadn't found their new homes they would put them in a different foster home. They are wonderful sweet dogs and they have done so well with my 2. I had already planned for my puppy when the call came in to foster these 2. Originally we had agreed that if the dogs hadn't found homes they would go to a new foster home when the puppy came but, they dont deserve to be shuffled around again....I would love for them to be able to stay with me as long as I won't get into trouble. If anyone knows the rules on that I would appreciate it! Thanks so much! Adira

rescued husky mix--a success story

last year we (my partner and our two really old cats) made room in our home for a dog. we wanted a rescue dog who needed a home that would welcome and adore him/her...at the time we were looking for we didn't know what/who yet but we were going to feel it out.

i did some research into the no-kill animal shelters and rescues in our area and checked out their web-sites and found the pet adoption days and locations and decided to go check one out in person. my partner and a close friend went with me. the adoption was held at a big-box-chain-pet-store which generally isn't my style, but since they were hosting this event and allowing homeward bound (the animal rescue through whom we found and rescued our dog) to bring rescued animals to be seen by families and/or individuals interested in opening their homes to a rescue, i thought why not see what this is all about.

they set up at the back of the store and took up quite a bit of space. there were all kinds of domestic animals as this rescue takes all sorts of species to place in new homes. i mmediately noticed there were several sizes and breeds of dogs (in kennels) there and more that were still at their foster homes. the volunteers (often fosters to these or other animals) were very helpful and had lots of information about each animal including ages and health histories whenever possible. as i walked through the kennels i saw this face looking out at me from between the bars of a large black kennel and something about this face struck me. i do not even know what it was in particular. this dog had something.

there must have been nearly 20 dogs present that day and many dogs were far more enthusiastic and energetic, but i read her information and decided to take her out of the kennel--knowing it would be nearly impossible to put any animal back in the kennel once removed. but i did it anyway. i walked her through the store and out the front (having left my drivers license with the volunteer) and located my partner and my friend who had had enough of the dogs and cats in kennels as it was depressing them...they were out front and when my partner saw that i had taken this dog out of the kennel and was walking around with it he knew this must be the one, though at the time i had no idea.

my partner walked around alone with her for a while and then she sat with all of us and that is when i knew--we all knew. she needed to come with us.
i went and got cash as this particular rescue does not accept credit cards. the cost was not cheap and that made me feel even more comfortable with the rescue as i knew i would be paying for the health care and up keep of rescued animals including the vet visits, spaying/neutering, and insertion of micro-chips in all of them as is standard with this rescue.

included in our dog's paper work were her entire veterinary health history, her breeder papers, her akc number, her micro-chip number, her previous owners account of her life with him and why he had to give her up along with his contact information if we needed to get any additional information. she turned 6 this year on may 21 here at our house and she is a very well-adjusted and happy dog. we love her and cannot imagine our life without her though it has only been less than a year that she has lived with us.

we live on the mississippi river and near many lakes and streams so she gets plenty of outside excercise and fresh air which as a husky / border collie mix suits her very well. brit is the best dog for our family. even the cats and she get along.

life is good. i am glad i checked out the homeward bound rescue--even if it was at a huge warehouse-type-store--and i would recommend checking out a similar rescue in your area if you are looking to open your home to an animal in need. i will defintely seek out a rescue again.

Excited to find you guys! Mastiffs

Hi everyone! Just wanted to do a quick introduction. I am in the kansas city area and I have 2 of my own english mastiffs....both rescues, one was a former foster of mine that I just couldn't let go of. :) Currently I am also fostering 2 english mastiffs as well. They are older dogs he is 7 and she is 6. I was just supposed to foster him but, when her foster home fell through I brought her to my house. They have lived their entire lives together and they were miserable for the couple of days they were w/o each other. I am so in love with these dogs I want them to find a good "forever" home together but, I am going to be so sad when they leave. I have been so surprised at how well all 4 of them have gotten along. I am really proud of all of them. I am beginning to think fostering isn't such a good idea for me. :) lol If I didn't have neighbors who would turn me in I think I would probably adopt many many more. Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself I will try to post pics of everyone later this week! Thank you! Robyn with Millie, Bueford, Caesar and Harley. (plus Lola skin kid and Cosmo and Pedro cats)

Advice for a overwhelming problem.......

So......I don't really know what to do. I recently relocated to Tucson, AZ and became a school bus driver for the largest school district in the area. I am all over town and am HORRIFIED at the amount of dogs running loose. They are everywhere! Puppies, packs, injured animals, sick animals, mamas with teets so swollen it's certain somethings happened with her puppies. Dogs that have cornered coyotes. I have cried while driving so many times. My heart just breaks. I have Animal Control programmed into my phone. The worst part is it's hard to really explain WHERE they can find the animal. I can give them a general idea of where I see the dog at that moment but these dogs are feral. They are on the move. And they need help right THEN. There is one Animal Control office way up on the Northwest side of town. And Tucson is 194.7 square miles! I had to call them a few months ago about a dead coyote on the very south eastern part of town that was half on the street/half on the sidewalk and it took them 4 days to get it! I called everyday!

I have gotten in touch with the Humane Society and Pima Animal Control. The Humane Society said Yes, it's a problem but to contact Pima Animal Control. Pima Animal Control says Yes, it's a problem but they have no money and not enough bodies as it is.

I am a born and raised Bay Area lady. These sorts of problems were rare where I am from and if there was a loose dog in the streets you would see a ton of people trying to catch it and help it.

I am no racist.....but I have to say hands down the WORST offenders seem to be the Hispanic and Native American neighborhoods in the Southern and Southwestern part of the city . Very few houses have fences. If they do, the dogs are STILL outside! I can't even type what I have seen on the reservation, I will be sick to my stomach for days. No one can do ANYTHING if it's on the reservation........totally different set of rules/jurisdiction. I have not been to the unpopulated areas of Mexico so I have no idea how they treat dogs in Mexico. I have traveled to other countries that have that "it's just a dog" type attitude. I don't get it.

WHAT THE HELL DO I DO????? Bury my head in the sand? Quit my job? Start a revolution? PLEASE HELP. What would YOU do if you were me? I have talked to other bus drivers and they seem to think I'll get used to it! And I am constantly reminded if a dog runs in front of the bus I am NOT to brake super hard, I am to hit it. Do I have it in me? I understand that point.....the kids are very important that are on the bus. But to HIT a dog!!!!!! Shit!

I am going to post this everywhere I can so I apologize if you see it in countless places. My job is very intense and stressful and full of responsibility. This just adds another dimension of DOOM. Ya know....what fucked up thing will I see TODAY?

Thanks for reading thus far. I need some direction!
Christine

My name is Molly. My mother was an australian shepherd/westie mix and my father was a boxer mix. I came out looking like a really big Scotty dog. I am extremely intelligent, housebroken, crate trained, easy to obedience train but I need a home where I am the only companion. I get along great with people and am a big baby but am not so crazy about other critters. If you are interested in giving me a home of my own, you can contact Sandy at alternative_couple@yahoo.com Picture available upon request.

Spiritual Sexual Predator

An open response to Tantric M (people.tribe.net/894389d7-...dfb363dc1)

Let me tell you a story about me and LilShadow, the woman you called a liar on the Burningman Tribe (bm.tribe.net/thread/a6c9...6a77591132b)

It's in our Testimonials to each other.
I asked her to be a friend.. She said no. I accepted that. I didn't ask again and again. I respect women. Hell...I respect people!
We met on the Playa, held hands, and drank blood together.
We have been fast friends ever since. Walking each other through some seriously tough times, laughing and sharing the good. Talking on the phone at least once a month ever since.
She is an Angel!
One thing she has never done is lie. To me, or to anyone I know.

You questioned the integrity of a good woman. That was your first mistake.
Your second was picking on someone that you thought was weak.

Since then, I have been contacted by other women that you have preyed on.
One has only to look at some of the degrading photo's of women, of seriously sick Porn mixed in with 'Prayer Wheels' to see your character.
Personally...I think you are a new phenomenon.
The 'Spiritual Sexual Predator'.
I just evicted one from the Ranch I'm on. (See my Blog)((people.tribe.net/kamikazek...comments)) He, like you, was pathetic. Spouting New Age buzz words as a self described 'Enlightened Master' while eating our food, not working, and hitting on jail bait.
Every woman felt creeped out (like the women on Tribe I've talked to) 'hit on' by a dirty old Hippy.
Sound familiar??
Many women have come to me with tales of you.
Your actions speak much louder than your words.
Your past is verified by several independent sources.
Abuse has been notified.
If any other women than the 8 tonite who have contacted me want to speak to this issue, an issue (in my opinion) of a 'Spiritual Sexual Predator', please band together, speak out, and notify abuse at
www.abuse@tribe.net
KK
ps
I intend to cross post this on every Tribe that Tantric M subscribes to. If it gets me kicked off Tribe...so be it.
My intentions are as if I were a Father watching out for my Daughter.

My girlfriends friend in Alexander City, Alabama, a pitbull wondered up to their property and they say he looks like his backs been burned by scalding hot water. they been feeding it and stuff keeping it in the backyard, but they have a new born baby, and 3 other dogs, and cna not keep this dog. They found a PItbull rescue place around their area, but they will not take this dog, unless it has all its shots they say (thy dont know if it does, has no tags), or donate $100 to them, not much of a rescue place in my opinion!!! Anyone have aniy ideas for this poor dog, or anyone in around that area in Alabama that may know anything, or know anyone that may care for this guy, that are kind people that wont fight em and such? any info. or anything helps. theor not sure oif its background or anything, guess so far it's been nice to them. I considered spreadin the news to take em to the poound, but i'd only suggest that as last resort, pounds are so quick about just putting Pits down!!!!!! email me at jahluvcolorado@yahoo.com

Home for a Weimeraner mix

My brother is having hard time with his Weimeraner mix dog (his name is Chopper). He had "Chopper" since he was a month old or so. Chopper now is about 8 and half years old.

My brother is in financial difficulties and had to move into an apartment. It's been a couple of years and my brother is having tough time and cannot leave the dog alone in the apartment. So, he can't work and he's depressed and he's social life became non existence.

He's been debating for the last couple of years to surrender the dog out of these difficulties but he is fearful that giving Chopper to a
shelter they will kill him if he's not adopted after a couple of weeks.

We tried to surrender the dog to a no kill organizations but with no luck no. The ones that did reply, were full and couldn't help.

The dog is very healthy and has up to date immunizations.

Chopper has been treated very well throughout his life and could be a great companion to someone with a garden or that can spend time taking him out for hikes or other outdoors activities.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you. As, I'm concerned for my brother's well being. It's time for Chopper and him to part ways.

Hopefully you or someone you know can assist.

looking for a no kill facility

Hello all

I am helping out a guy at work (well actually his brother) find a NO KILL facility that will take aggressive dogs in Minnesota or surrounding areas.

The dog is a lab and although it is just fine with people… it can be very aggressive with dogs it doesn’t know. He gets along great with dogs it does know in the neighbourhood but with others it becomes very aggressive.

They are looking to give him up but worry because of the aggression it is unlikely the dog can be re adopted under ‘normal’ conditions. The Lab is a very very loving dog when it is not in the company of other dogs, this leads me to believe it is a security or jealousy issue for him. I am hoping someone here has some contact they can try.

I have contacted all the ‘regular’ local shelters and they don’t take aggressive dogs….. any ideas?

IN DIRE NEED OF NEW HOMES:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a56/TheDogWoman/Northsittingpretty.jpgNAME: North
HEALTH STATUS: Excellent
PERSONALITY: Quiet & gentle
TURN ON’S: My kennel & running
TURN OFF”S: Fast reaching for my collar
HISTORY: I was found at a rest area on
I-65 northbound, hence my name. I was super skinny, full of wounds and parasites and terrified. Now I am neutered, heartworm negative, healthy and happy. My vaccines are up to date.
TRAINING: I love my kennel, walk nicely on a leash, sit, wait, have great house manners (I do not get on the furniture – ever) and I am housebroken.
OTHER: I am very good with other dogs, I like cats and children are fine too (as long as they are well mannered like I am). I do need a fenced in yard because I like to run a lot and far. I always come home, but it is too dangerous to let me roam. I really need my kennel, so that I feel safe and comfortable.
EXTRAS: I come with health records, my collar & leash, Advantage & Heartgard to keep me healthy. (Negotiable: kennel included)
DESCRIPTION: I am about a year and a half to 2 years old. I am certain I am part Black Labrador, but that is all I am certain of. I am thinking possibly Great Pyrenees. I am a big dog, but I don’t take up much room. I will let you know when strangers arrive, but I do not bark excessively.
TURN ON'S: Snuggles
TURN OFF"S: Lack of attention
HISTORY: Showed up on doorstep one day. Was very skinny, had matted fur and a urinary tract infection. She is being fed regularly, the infection has been treated and she is a happy & healthy kitty
TRAINING: I use my litter box and play with my toys. I am learning the right places to scratch, like scratching posts. I am currently living with other cats and dogs and I am getting along fine.
OTHER: Up to date on shots and dewormed. Will be spayed before placement. I have a small adoption fee to help with the cost of my rescue.

My Rescue Hounds

"Have you adopted a Rescue/Shelter dog? Please come and tell us about your experience."

Hi all,

I am the food slave of two rescue Basset Hounds, Dudley and Minnie.

I wanted to have a Basset Hound since I was a kid. My neighbors had bassets while i was growing up, and I always thought they were the coolest dogs ever.

Many years later, my wife and I had been in our present home for several years, single family home, 1/2 acre fenced backyard, when I got the serious itch to finally get me a basset!
At first my wife was against the idea, this turned out to be a good thing. I knew if I was going to change her mind, I'd better learn everything I could about dog ownership in general, and bassets in particular. (If she had been for it immediately, I probably would have rushed into the whole thing, and possibly would have failed myself and whatever dog I got.) So I began my research, read many books, visited many websites, learned a lot, general and breed-specific. I'm incredibly glad I did my homework first. Most things I thought before...WRONG!
Long story short(er), after seeing so many Basset Rescue sites, I realized I didn't need to go buy a puppy. I could get a young-ish rescue hound, avoid the lengthy house-breaking process most bassets require, and give a forever home to an unwanted hound. For us, it was definitely the right thing to do.
Once I got the green light from my wife, I got in touch with the most local Basset Rescue, which is not that local, 75 miles away. All of their adoptable hounds were nearly that far away except one. "Sir Dudley, male tri-color, under 2 years old" was about the extent of his description on the rescue website. Dudley was being fostered at a kennel about 2 miles from our home. Of the dogs on the site, he was not on my list, but the rescue lady pushed pretty hard. I went to visit Dudley at the kennel, and fell in love by my 2nd visit. Next thing I knew, it was gotcha day, and he came home. :-)
I'd love to say it was smooth sailing from then on, but it wasn't. Dudley came from a place where he was pretty badly abused. Even after being fostered for a few months, he was still skin & bones when we got him. He has 2 or 3 ribs that were broken at some point and healed with big lumps. His tail has a big lump in it, I guess it got slammed in a door or something. The physical things turned out to be basically nothing compared to his mental/emotional baggage. I guess from the abuse, he was far more aggressive than your average Basset. Never bit anyone, but barked & growled at everyone except my wife and I. Scared the heck out of a bunch of people. My wife came very close to "the dog goes or I do", but I begged, pleaded, and cried my way out of that (not ashamed of it either).
With a lot of time, training, love, and patience (especially patience), he came around and turned into a pretty darn good dog! Dudley is my bestest bud in the world. :-)
A little less that 2 years after we first got Duds, my wife suggested we get another! (She now swears she never did, but I know the truth, she DID suggest it!) So we went back to the same rescue, and got Minnie. She originally came from a BYB, and had too many litters of pups. Other than being over-bred, whoever her original owners were treated her well. She has been a love-bug since day one. Dudley and Minnie get along great, with only the odd scrap here or there. Never any blood shed during their scraps, though a couple of times it sounded like they were gonna kill each other.

Enough detail here, just wanted to share some of our story, and say how happy I am that we got our hounds from Rescue. No one can save all the homeless dogs, but we got two, and I can't see us ever getting another that isn't a rescue or shelter dog.

One last thing: People who work in dog rescue and people who foster dogs are HEROS in my book!

Hi all,

Some of you may have noticed my recent postings about my search for a foster situation for my Socrates. I am wondering now what kinds of questions I should be asking each potential foster family, and what kind of contractual agreements I should be making. I know that many of you are involved with dog fostering, and hope that you can give me some words of wisdom and experience!

Thanks very much!

Desperate Repost ... Foster home needed!!!

Hi everyone!

I am reposting this in the hope that someone may be able to help me and my gorgeous dog Socrates out. It's a big one ... I am moving back to Australia from Boston and want desperately to take my baby with me. However, all the quarantine places in Australia are filled up for the next 5-6 months. Since I can only legally (well, legally-esque - i think i'm already over my visa limitations) stay in america for another month, I cannot wait with him. So, I am hoping to find someone out there who loves animals and is willing to foster Socrates during the time it takes to secure him a spot in quarantine.

He is a beautiful fox terrier/beagle mix, with a truly old soul and the heart of an angel. He LOVES humans, and would bring so much love and affection to you. He's nearly 5, in good health, and I would of course provide a much remuneration as I possibly could, incl his food/vet bills.

It's a big ask, I know, but I have to try and believe that there is someone out there who may be able to help me and my beloved get through this. I've had him for a year, and cannot imagine my life without him. If you are interested, or know anyone who may be, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know asap!

Hoping and loving,
Lauren and Socrates

Has anyone ever dealt with a Distemper survivor? I just adopted a sweet little guy from Southern California Poodle Rescue and he survived Distemper. I'd love to talk with anyone who has any experience with this disease.

Hello, please help

Hi all. Sorry to barge in, but I need some help...

I've got a bassett mix female pup (rescued from a shelter) that my mom couldn't deal with, and I am now reaching the end of my tolerance. My mom had her for the first 6-8 weeks, and I've had her for the past 3 or 4.

The problem is housebreaking.

She went all over when she was in my mom's place, and my mom didn't have the energy or skills to deal with her properly. Here, with us, she mostly goes near the door when she needs to go. It's so frustrating, because she will go outside, go potty and then come in and 15 minutes later poop (she poops like 4 times a day because I catch her midway so she never finishes, until she needs to go again).

She does seem to understand that outside is where she needs to go, but she will only sit quietly at the door - no scratching or whining or circling - and she waits maybe 30 seconds then just does the deed. I'm convinced the problem could be solved if I could just teach her to let me know that she has to go.

I keep her crated at night (and she keeps it clean) or contained in the kitchen during the day unless I know I can keep an eye on her, or I think it's "safe" to let her play with my other dog for 15 or 20 minutes. It often ends up not being as safe as I thought it would be. I take her out frequently, as I am a stay at home mom and have the time.

I have attempted to clicker train her to scratch my leg (which she jumps on me instead), so that I then can get her to scratch my leg at the door and eventually move outside with it - the idea is that then she can relate scratching my leg with going outside. This approach was recommended during a potty training workshop at Petsmart. It's not working very well. Lacey doesn't seem able to connect it, and I must not be doing it right.

I have recently started to grab her paw, when she sits quietly at the door, and make her physically paw at my leg once and then the door while saying "outside", before I let her out.

I am so frustrated. Yesterday and today I have left her tied outside longer because I don't know how to deal with her. I'm finding it difficult to have any endearing thoughts or feelings towards this little puupy, and instead think about how hard she is to live with. While I understand that she's a puppy and may not "get" it, I also know that by now she should be well housebroken, and I fear it will never happen. If I can't break her of her habit of just going when she feels like it, I will most likely return her to the shelter.

Any ideas?

Hi everyone!

I am hoping to find an angel to help me and my gorgeous dog Socrates out.

NIKKI FOUND A HOME!! I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU!

THANK YOU!!!
Thank you for posting Nikki's picture as the group photo. I am so thankful for everyone who helped me out. I am also so very relieved that she has finally found a worthy home. She will be living with a family in Redondo Beach, CA. They have two kids 5 and 10 and they also have another dog... a puppy 7 months old. Nikki had her "test run" with the family over the past 5 days... they just fell in love. I don't see how anyone could not fall in love with Nikki - she is such a sweet girl.

I will delete my listings requesting a home for Nikki. She has found one! Yeah!!

Thankful,
Laura and Lady Bug

My dog sitter seems to have been depressed and forgot she left my dog leashed outside the 99 cents store on La Brea and Willoughby. He is 13 years old and hard of hearing. His name is Auggie and has an ID Tatoo. I am beside myself with emotions...please if you have seen him or know of his whereabouts please contact me at 323 937 7439. Thank you. Monika

Can you help? (This info. was posted Jan 8, 1:08 PM as bulletin on MySpace. )

"Mom with 9 two day old pups needs Rescue - Spalding GA
VERY URGENT.. at spalding.. Mom with her two day old nursing puppies brought to shelter today. She needs out ASAP.. before her puppies get sick.
Numbers are a07-0045 and a07-0044-52

Mom appears to be lab mix. very sweet and docile. Has nine puppies. Some of the puppies look golden mix, one looks chocolate lab mix.. hard to tell, and lots are black pups.

(Several photos were in this middle section on MS. )

They are at the Spalding Co. Animal Shelter in Griffin, GA. This is a gassing shelter!

Please spread the word. Need rescue group capable of caring for a mom with such young puppies!!!"
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The pic. of mom shows a lovely black dog with a white bib. She has a "thin" face. (Looks perhaps like a Lab. and Greyhound mix??? ) Definitely *some* sort of Lab. mix.

The pups were shades of tan, chocolate and black. (Remind me to post the photos in the gallery, if I haven't already. I don't have time to do so at this moment. )

These will be beautiful dogs, if they are allowed to live. (The mom is already beautiful! ) Please help! At the very least, please spread the word!

I'm trying to pick up some friends so I can spread the word of some homeless dogs in need. It's going pretty slow..

Hi! My name is Nikki!

I am a German Shepard/Rottweiler mix. I am 3 years old, spayed, micro chipped and current on vaccines. I really need to find a loving forever home. My previous owner was deployed in the service and could not find anyone to take me so he was forced to surrender me to a shelter. I got lucky, however, and now I have a second chance at life. I am very friendly and loving, I like kids and I get along with other dogs. (not cat tested yet but we’re working on that) I know “sit”, “down” and “shake”. I would love to come home with you and love you forever! Interested parties please call: Laura @ 951-847-6777 or email: laurac2cheshire@yahoo.com

Cannot post pictures?

Thanks for reading! Laura

I'm interested in adopting a little brother for Peanut from the same rescue organization that the P came from. The problem, I'm no longer in California. The other problem, I've fallen in love with a pup in Southern California.

Is anyone making the Cali-Portland trek for the holidays? (Or anywhere along that route?)...I'm wondering if I can't organize an underground railroad of sorts to get this pup to his new home.
Urgent! - Possible Escape for 1 Research dog

Buster is a 3 1/2 year old Hound dog. He's been a UCLA research dog but is a virgin (never involved in any studies). His primary caretaker told my mom a while ago that he had to find a way to have Buster adopted because he's such a good dog. The care taker has helped Buster to avoid an inevitable fait for a while, but Buster’s time has run out. UCLA has strict rules about research animals, so I making an K-9 underground railroad for this one little guy.

Animal testing is a horrible thing (as I think we all agree). I would really like to take down the whole system, but in the meantime, we have the opportunity to save this one hound-dog.

If we do not find a home or adopt this dog he will go into a horrible research program on Monday.

Buster is quiet and calm. He is nervous at first, but quickly opens up. He just lies down, waiting to be petted. He is very loyal to people, and when he is not on leash, he just stands there next to you waiting for your lead. He would be a great pet.

Clearly he will need some training, but he is well socialized with dogs and humans. I don’t know what we can do, but we need to do something.

What does everyone think about saving Buster? What is our next step?
Okay, so should I put in a request to be the moderator of this tribe? (I honestly think "Supah" bailed long ago... )

Let me know what you think, so I can petition the powers that be, for the position if you agree.
